Academy College Credit
If you attended a Nevada Police Academy you should be eligible for 33 college credit hours that can be applied to earning your certificate.
Detective Knight recently earned the college credit necessary to obtain his Intermediate POST by doing the following:
I enrolled at Liberty University because it accepts transfer credit from both my law enforcement academy training and third-party providers such as Sophia Learning. Combined with Liberty University’s law enforcement tuition discount, this made Liberty an ideal choice for obtaining the credits required to earn my Intermediate POST certification and to continue progressing toward my Advanced POST.
Sophia Learning (https://www.sophia.org/) offers a flexible and cost-effective option for earning transferable college credits. The program costs $99 per month and allows students to work on two courses at a time. There is no limit to the number of courses that can be completed within a month, and once a course is finished, Sophia automatically submits it to Liberty University for transfer credit.
During my first two months, I dedicated time to completing the following courses through Sophia Learning, totaling 21 credits:
- Principles of Human Biology (BIO 102) – 3 credits
- Mathematics for Liberal Arts (MATH 115) – 3 credits
- Composition & Rhetoric (ENGL 101) – 3 credits
- Survey of American History (HIUS 221) – 3 credits
- Survey of American History II (HIUS 222) – 3 credits
- Personal Finance (BUSI 223) – 3 credits
- Introduction to Ethics (ETHC 101) – 3 credits
In addition to these credits, Liberty University accepted 24 transfer credits from my police academy training. This brought my total to 45 credits, which met the educational requirements for Intermediate POST based on my years of service.
Liberty University offers several benefits specifically for law enforcement professionals, including:
- A 25% tuition discount
- Evaluation of prior education, military service, on-the-job experience, and training certifications for potential college credit
Eligible prior experience includes police academy training, dispatcher academy, CIT, Reid Interrogation School, FLETC, basic firearms training (rifle, shotgun, pistol), basic instructor development, and similar certifications.
I also applied for financial aid and qualified for the Pell Grant. After discounts and aid, my out-of-pocket cost is approximately $490 per course, or about $122 per credit.
